WASHINGTON, D.C.: The Biden administration has announced it will propose legislation to require the nation's utility companies to produce power through increasing sources of renewable energy.
During the presidential campaign, President Joe Biden said he would work to de-carbonize the nation's electricity sector by 2035, and the entire economy by 2050.
Seeking alternatives to coal and oil-based energy sources, the Biden administration will propose increased reliance on nuclear energy, as well as carbon capture and storage technologies, said Gina McCarthy, White House national climate adviser, during a briefing with reporters.
"We're interested in pursuing this and talking to Congress about it," McCarthy said. "The industry itself sees it as one of the most flexible and most effective tools."
In March, Democrats in Congress proposed a bill to require 80 percent of retail power to come from sources that produce little or no carbon emissions by 2030, and 100 percent by 2035.
Republicans, however, have warned that the legislation would raise energy prices and destabilize the nation's electric grid.
